Remove duplication in tests

Unit and integration tests have a lot of duplication. Raising this as part of new tech debt created in #177

Hi @ojongerius, I'd like to start helping out with open-api. Working on the unit tests seems like a good way for me to get my feet wet. Can you assign me to this issue?
