Editor like a text file

Hi again!

Could you please add the option to edit the file like if it was a text editor?

I know about the double click, but it replaces the data, to keep the same file size.

I would like the option of adding new data. For example I converted an MP3 File to WAV, I want to remove the WAV header and add the BMP header. But I can't because I will lose data if the header are of different sizes. I had to do this in HxD.

I know I can use both programs, but it would be nice to have it all in one program.. I want my cake and eat it! hahaha (joking)

P.S.; When I create a new File I only get "FF" and can only edit the FF. So yea, it would be nice to add the feature I am asking for.

Hey, you can enable the insert mode under the Edit menu of the hex editor view. Then you can double click a cell and instead of modifying its value, it will insert a new one there.

Thanks, tried it. It doesn't work as in other editors, I had to more than once double click to start inserting (Created a new file)... It added 2 new '00' and then I could start typing.

Worse? I can't delete what I inserted. (Yes, the new data is in red, though not all), but if I make a mistake I can't use backspace or del button, you have to double click the mistake to edit it, but it adds a new '00' at the end of the file.

Once you stop writing, you have to double click again a location to start adding new data and it adds more '00' at the end of the file. (And that white '42' and '43' should be red).

At least that is how ImHex is working for me. Since I am not an expert programmer maybe that is how programmers work? Or I am missing something? In HxD I can just click where I want to enter new data, it doesn't add and extra '00' at the end of the file and I can use Del and Backspace to delete data, also select a chunk of data and delete it. (Like if it was notepad/notepad++).

HxD makes it very easy to make changes to files inadvertently. imHex prevents you from just typing and changing the file by requiring you to double click to change existing data or by using insert mode to add new data. If you make a mistake you need to turn insert mode off, double click on the mistake and type the correct value. Another way to add values is to insert as many zeros as you want using the Insert... menu entry on Edit to add and then you can double click to change their values. That allows you to use the cursor and to edit possible mistakes. Note that the backspace key or delete will not remove values even in insert mode. To remove values use the Remove ... menu of Edit. Although this may seem a bit cumbersome, it is done this way to minimize accidental modifications to possibly important binary files.
